Willow Family,
We are writing to share an important leadership transition at Willow Creek. Our Senior Pastor, Dave Dummitt, has faithfully served Willow over the last five years. Last fall, he shared with the Elder Board that his time as Senior Pastor was coming to a close, and he has decided to step down from staff. Dave’s heart has always been to serve this church, and we have spent the past several months prayerfully working together to ensure a smooth and healthy transition.
As Elders, we are responsible for seeking God’s will for Willow’s future, selecting and guiding the senior pastor, and ensuring our church remains faithful to its mission and values. With that responsibility, we approached this process with prayer, discernment, and rigor. We first sought to understand what Willow needs in this next season, aiming to find someone who is a teacher, shepherd, and leader; spiritually, relationally, and emotionally healthy; and theologically aligned with Willow’s mission.
We developed a structured, multi-step process to evaluate candidates, consulted with a faith-based hiring firm, outlined interviews and assessments, and sought wisdom from experienced church leaders. We followed a thorough, Spirit-led process to discern whether we had the right leader already serving within Willow or if an external search would be needed. Through this process, we identified Shawn Williams, Willow’s Executive Pastor of Weekends and South Barrington Campus Pastor, as a strong internal candidate.
A robust, five-month vetting process included a multi-level assessment with a pastoral search firm, in-depth professional theological and psychological evaluations, and interviews to confirm Shawn’s alignment with Willow’s beliefs and leadership needs. After extensive prayer and fasting, the Elders unanimously affirmed Shawn as Willow’s next senior pastor. We are confident that his unique experiences, passion, and love for Jesus and His church will help us step into our future with a strong commitment to live out our mission.
Before coming to Willow, Shawn earned his Master of Theology from Wheaton College and served in multiple leadership roles at Community Christian Church (Naperville) and Central Church (Las Vegas). Since joining the Willow staff in 2020, Shawn has proven to be an effective leader and impactful teacher, leading staff and the South Barrington congregation with authenticity, wisdom, and clarity.
We as Elders, Shawn, Dave, and Willow’s leadership team are committed to a healthy transition process in the coming months. Dave will continue to serve as Senior Pastor Emeritus through July, advising and guiding during the transition as Shawn assumes senior pastor responsibilities beginning April 1.
Dave came to Willow during a critical moment in our church’s history, leading through a time of change with wisdom, humility, and a heart for unity. He has played an essential role in bringing stability and ensuring a strong foundation for the future. We thank Dave and his family for how they have served, and we will have time to celebrate the Dummitts before Dave’s official transition off staff.
Willow has always been a church that trusts God for the future and embraces the next chapter with faith. We ask that you pray with us for Dave, Shawn, their families, and our staff and lean in with expectation for what God will do next at Willow.
As we approach Willow’s 50th anniversary, we are grateful for what has been and are expectant for what is ahead. Thank you for being part of this church family. We are excited to walk this next season together.
