There is so much I could write about this story of the prodigal son. I was a prodigal at one time and so were several of my children. All of us have been far away from God.  We hurt the Father’s heart by sin and rebellion. We all find ourselves desperately in need of His amazing grace. If we could only know what kind of love awaits us, we would be overwhelmed and amazed beyond belief.

Honestly, I think that the father already had the best robe stored in the son’s closet. He had the ring on the dresser; and he had the shoes by the bed. Why do I think that? The Bible tells us that God did not wait until we came and asked for forgiveness to make a plan for our salvation. No, the Bible says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Therefore, if you bear the name son or daughter through having received Jesus as Lord, the best robe has been placed upon you, a demonstration of the Father’s complete approval. A ring has been put on your hand, representing the riches you have in Christ. And, sandals put on your feet, affirming your sonship to guide you back home.

The Prodigal Son is a beautiful reminder of how important it is to celebrate and rejoice in the unmerited favor of our Heavenly Father and receive His glorious benefits. If you are waiting to rejoice and celebrate. Don’t.
