Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” … But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:3-4, 8-9

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.

Revelation 19:11-13

“The doctor will be right in.” When you hear these words, do you sit on the edge of your vinyl chair staring at the door, just knowing it will open any minute? Me neither. I usually take out my phone or open the magazine stuffed in my purse because “right in” can carry a wide range of meanings. Sometimes the door opens a few minutes later, and sometimes I find myself studying a digestive system diagram, wondering if I’ve been forgotten.

Waiting for God can feel like that. God’s timing is perfect—perfect for His plans but not always ours. We only see one side of the door. Our side can sound quiet and still. Time moves, but things remain stagnant. What is God waiting for? We feel like it’s time for Him to move already.

But we don’t see the other side of the door—the side where God is working and orchestrating and moving.

I have waited in a lot of doctors’ offices. I have studied a lot of anatomy posters and ticking clocks, but there is one thing that has never happened. I have never been forgotten. The doctor always comes.

Jesus is coming. He may come in my lifetime or many years after I’ve left this earth. Sometimes I wonder if God sees all that is happening down here—the violence, the pain, the hurt. Is he really going to let things go on like this?

Then I remember He knows. He sees. We haven’t been forgotten. We can trust that Jesus will return at the perfect time, and until then, He remains here with us in Spirit, offering comfort and peace that can truly only come from Him.
