Spoiler Alert: Jesus Lives

“Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
1 Corinthians 15:24-26
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
Sometimes I wonder why I watch the news. One sad story after another fills the screen while pain and sadness fill my heart. I tell myself I want to stay informed even if it brings sorrow. Once in a while, a positive story makes the headlines, but the ratio of positive to negative is so small.
I’m convinced it wasn’t supposed to be this way—having every news story at our fingertips moments from when it happens. Sometimes I long for the days of the Pony Express, when it would take 10 days for news to travel from one end of the county to the next. I imagine the senders had to be particular about which information they sent. If they sent every bit of news, they would run out of ponies.
But here we are, in the 21st century, being inundated with story after story, crime after crime, disaster after disaster. It takes mere seconds for news to travel, and we have so many sources—TV, internet news, and social media. There is a news story that doesn’t get told often enough—the good news that Jesus has already overcome.
This news story, making headlines over 2,000 years ago, is so important, yet it is often not at the forefront of our minds. Recent news stories usually take the place of “old news.” What we thought about yesterday is pushed to the back of our minds to make room for new information.
Today, we have so much new information crowding our brains, it can be easy for the good news of Jesus to be pushed to the background. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “I have overcome the world.” He is in control, sitting on the throne, and will return to restore order and peace to our broken world.
The hard part is waiting because we don’t know when that day will come. It could be days, years, or even centuries. While we wait, we cannot forget this good news. There is a lot of evil in the world, but we need to remember the good. We need to remember that, in the end, evil will not win. Sin won’t have the last word. Jesus will. He already has.
