Share Your Burden

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:18-20
I am a victim of our independent culture. I rarely delegate my tasks because I don’t want to impose on others. The truth is, though, delegating helps lighten the load, physically and spiritually. I’m reminded of two incidents when I bucked our culture and my tendencies and embraced the beauty of delegating.
One year, as a middle school math teacher, I was expected to move into a new room. I enlisted the help of one particular class and with the efforts of 25 students, I was able to accomplish the transition in less than 30 minutes. Alone, it would have taken an entire day of back-breaking labor.
Another time, I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me to visit a new friend for an entire weekend. This friend was raised Hindu and is currently a practicing Buddhist. A month before visiting this friend, I enlisted my small group and my serving group to pray for clear opportunities to share God’s love and for my friend to be receptive. Throughout the three days, we had a wonderful time together and had many spiritual conversations. There was too much at stake. My spiritual burden needed to be shared, and God answered abundantly.
In both cases, using simple examples because I lead a simple life, the people who were assisting were so happy and satisfied to feel purposeful and truly needed. They were invested in the outcome and served with joy.
God doesn’t want us to be anxious. Frequently, the key to not becoming anxious is to delegate physical and/or spiritual needs. The purpose is not to be needy, but to recognize that the best solution is often to empower other people to help. Let them accumulate some treasure in heaven by assisting you.
Next Steps
Jesus empowered the disciples when he sent them out to teach without Him and when He had them serve during the feeding of the thousands. If Jesus delegated when appropriate, then you can certainly pray about asking for help. Perhaps it will bring joy instead of anxiety.
