Plenty To Go Around

She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
Mark 5:26-29

Why does God heal some people and not others? I don’t know. But what I do know is that we live in a broken world where suffering is common. Those who suffer often go to great lengths to stop, or at least lessen, their pain. Sometimes, their efforts work; other times, it feels like wasted energy. All of this begs the question: If God is real and really cares for people, does He have enough power to go around?

In Mark 5, Jesus heals individuals both before and after curing the woman’s chronic illness. This story is bookended by the Lord’s restoration of a demon-possessed man and the raising of the young girl from the dead. That’s a lot of divine power being demonstrated in one Bible chapter. The beauty of this fatigued lady’s faith is that she mustered the strength, to grab Jesus’ robe as he passed by. But more than that, the beauty of Christ’s ability to heal is that going from one place to another didn’t limit God’s power or deny potential access to it.

There is no clear explanation for why Jesus healed some people and not others. But that has no bearing on the fact that He cares for us and can make us whole. What we need to know, remember, and trust is that God is mighty, and it’s always worth putting our faith behind His power. His strength never runs out. His potency is never not enough. We don’t need to wait for Him to recharge. His Son showed the world once and for all that God is all-powerful, even when we experience the limitations of a fallen world. Without a doubt, God has plenty of power to go around.
