The Lasting Impact of Hope Packs

Real stories from real people whose lives have been changed

The power of taking a few minutes to assemble a Hope Pack has the potential to infuse hope and change that can last a lifetime for the man or woman who receives the gift. Often feeling isolated and forgotten from society, Hope Packs offer those who are incarcerated a contrary reminder that they are remembered, they are loved, and there is hope for them beyond the four walls they find themselves in.

Hebrews 13:3 says, “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

When God tells us to visit and care for those in prison, it’s not merely a suggestion or a simple act of kindness—it’s part of Jesus’ greater mission to love the world and redeem the lives of those willing to receive Him. When we choose to remember and care for those in prison by gifting Hope Packs, we make room for God to leave powerful tracings of the Gospel message—Jesus’ redemptive love and compassion—in the lives of those who receive the gifts. As His church, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus to a lost and hopeless world. Here are some letters from men and women who received Hope Packs while incarcerated:

“I want to thank you for the Christmas packages we received, the prayers you pray, and the love you share. It really means a lot to know that we are not forgotten. It brightens our day to have people care. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Drive safely and create lots of memories. Thank you for everything. With love, Katrina.”

“Dear Willow Creek, Thank you so much for the gift bags and puzzles. It always brightens up my day. I’ve spent many Christmases behind bars (25 years), and it amazes me how Jesus has stood by me the whole time. He has never left me alone. He has worked through many people. The work you do is definitely God’s work. You touch so many people. Even the non-believers see the amazing love you have for us all in here. The puzzle books are very important. It reminds people constantly who visited us and took the time to compile the book—which gets better every year. I was so touched this year. It brought tears to my eyes. I pray one day I can assist in filling up those bags. I know it’s a year long project. May God bless all of you and your families. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Jesse.

“Last night I said a deep prayer and asked God to please send me a sign letting me know that He has not abandoned me as I have often lately felt. Today I received my sign—it was the gift bag you sent. I know that. I believe that. Thank you for helping to restore my faith, and thank you for being an instrument of our Lord’s work. Sincerely, David”

“I want to thank all of you, who make this possible, for each individual who can’t be with their families and loved ones this year, and to the ones who have nobody, but God and His Son Our Lord and Savior—and to me that should be enough. Isaiah 49:15. I know for myself and others I talk to after receiving their gift basket, how grateful they are. It’s nice to know that someone out there in this world cares to be thought of during these hard times. I dropped you a letter in the mail last year thanking you all for my gift basket. Thank you for writing me back. Please take care of yourselves and the ones around you. May God give you peace. Warmly, Shawn.”

“Dear Willow Creek Community Church, Happy Holidays and New Year to all! I just wanted to write to you, your congregation, and all the wonderful volunteers, and say thank you very much for the Christmas gifts that were sent to this facility. It may seem like a small gift, but that was the biggest and greatest gift of all—helping others and thinking about others when the world has forgotten you. The holiday seasons are very difficult for me, especially being in prison. It gets really lonely in here, and receiving Christmas gifts are very special and helps you cope a little better. It is good to know that God loves me, and He sends angels our way like Willow Creek to remind us that we are loved and not forgotten about. When I received my Christmas gift, I felt like I did when I was child. I felt excited, overwhelmed, filled with joy. I felt loved. Giving my life to God and living my life for God was the best thing that ever happened to me. The next best thing was Willow Creek Community Church accepting me and treating me and others like children of God—because we all are children of God. With this world so full of hate, you guys bring me joy. I can feel your love through the gifts. Thank you, James.”

We’re assembling Hope Packs during services on Sunday, November 17! You can also learn more and get involved with Willow’s Prison & Jail Ministry here.
