Help Me Pray

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Romans 8:26-29

At times, my prayers feel like I am reciting a grocery list. I confidently reel off items without making room for God’s input. In contrast, one of my most impactful experiences came when I had no idea what to pray for. My world was upended when someone in my inner circle shattered my trust. Overcome by grief, I could not put a prayer into words. As I wept, I felt the Holy Spirit comforting me so powerfully that I vividly recall the sensation decades later.

Today’s passage teaches us that the Holy Spirit meets us in our weakness. We do not know God’s will, but the Spirit does. He prays for us when we have no words because our souls are bleeding, and when our prayers are misguided. This knowledge frees me from thinking I must pray perfectly. But that is not all! Since the Spirit prays according to God’s will, His prayers are always answered. His perfect prayers help the famous verse in this passage come to pass, the promise God works all things for the good of those who love Him.

I am convinced the Holy Spirit’s intercession during that dark time brought me three wonderful sisters in Christ. They supported me emotionally and helped me trust again. One became my spiritual mentor, teaching me about prayer and Bible study. Another babysat my young kids when I needed a break. The third sister in Christ grew up with an alcoholic parent like I did. She taught me about codependency, which changed the way I think about and participate in relationships. These wise women showed me God’s love and helped me learn and grow—exactly what I needed.

Our defining moments often come when the earth crumbles beneath our feet, making us open to the work of the Spirit. God took my shattered heart and changed me. As verse 29 says, He conformed me to the image of His Son. Though I would never choose to go through an experience like that again, I am grateful for the way it shaped me. When I remember the Holy Spirit’s comfort and the transformational helpers God sent me, it is easy to believe God weaves every detail of my life together for good.

Are you reassured knowing the Holy Spirit fills the gaps in our prayers?

God wants us to contribute to bringing good out of suffering. I shared my troubles with my wise sisters in Christ. What risk might you need to take to accept God’s help? How might you make yourself available to be an answer to prayer?
